In this workshop, Ame will explore the uses of pranayama and bandha engagement to create deeper strength and connection within asana practice. Through a sequence tailored to cultivate understanding of the 3 bandhas- mula, uddiyana, and jalandhara, you will learn how to integrate them into your normal practice and subsequently transform your asana experience. From twists to arm balances to hip openers and backbends, breath and bandha integration will help you to stabilize and support yourself from the inside out. Come on an empty stomach.

Hip Opening Focus

Suffer from lower-back pain, angry hip flexors or impossible hamstrings? This workshop is for you. One of the most stubborn regions in the body, "hip-opening" can often seem vague and random. Beginning with a slow flow opening, this class will build on itself through creative variations on surya namaskar, alignment-heavy standing posture work, and the ever-important family of seated postures. You will learn the common mistakes made in hip-focused work, and how to coax and encourage flexibility rather than hinder it. Looser hips can lead to freer back bends, forward bends and arm balances, along with better posture and mobility off the mat. Come ready to stretch, sweat and tackle the demons in the hip joints.

Backbending Focus

The art of backbending is often elusive, sometimes scary and intangible for many. Beginning with a slow flow opening, this class will build on itself through creative variations on surya namaskar, alignment-heavy standing posture work, and the ever-important family of seated postures.By opening the hip flexors, spine and shoulders, you will be in optimal shape to backbend. Once you're warmed up you will learn, in detail, the proper shoulder alignment for various backbends and useful techniques to get past physical and mental blocks that keep you from fully experiencing them. Backbends are exhilarating postures when done well and can dramatically alter your practice and emotional state. Come ready to be challenged, elongated and inspired.
