SANTA CATALINA

Santa Catalina is the kind of town you see in the surf movies, an adventurous far off place that’s hard to get to, but so worth it. It’s the town you imagine visiting and getting lost in, when everywhere else feels overcrowded and impersonal. A remote beach town on the Pacific Coast where local fishermen and their families gather every day to enjoy the sunset, surfers ride on skateboards to the beaches and families commute by horseback for the school drop-off.

Why You’ll Love Santa Catalina

1.) LAIDBACK VILLAGE LIFESTYLE

  • No Starbucks or burger chains in sight, just locally owned low-impact businesses – not even an ATM!
  • Small, uncrowded and safe community – around 500 locals and only 50 or so expats
  • There’s not a beach bar or disco in this town. Our days begin and end with the sun, with an early-to-bed and early-to-rise lifestyle. The sunrise at Playa Estero you don’t want to miss
2.) WORLD-CLASS SURFING AND DIVING
  • A world-class wave for advanced surfers at The Point
  • A gentle wave and uncrowded beach break for beginners to intermediates at Playa Estero
  • World-class diving and snorkeling at nearby Coiba National Park
3.) WELLNESS
  • Plenty of fresh organic fish and seafood caught by the local fisherman and local produce from neighboring farms in Chiriquí
  • Wellness awaits – when it’s time to get out of the sun and surf, we retreat to yoga and massage
4.) REMOTENESS
  • A 5.5 hour drive from Panama City keeps all the minivan tourist buses at bay. Here you’ll truly find time and space to tap out from your city life. The drive is long but trust us, it’s worth it

Why Panama is the Ultimate Surf and Yoga Retreat Destination ?

Panama has long been understated, falling into the shadow of the neighbouring tourism-rich Costa Rica or the seemingly alluring untouched beaches and culture of Nicaragua, Guatemala or El Salvador. Over the years I’ve travelled and surfed all of these lands, and none have compared to Panama for us. In Panama is an incredibly safe country, low crowds, rich local culture and unique breathtaking landscapes.

“(Panama) A place where warm uncrowded waves always seem to break perfectly, and the past is the present which is also the future”

— STEVE BISSELL | SURFER MAGAZINE

Reasons Why You’ll Love Panama:

1.) UNCROWDED BEACHES
  • Uncrowded beaches and local village off the ‘gringo trail’ – finally, beautiful beach towns that aren’t overdeveloped and seething with tourists.

2.) SAFETY AND PEACE OF MIND
  • Peace of mind that comes with a safe country with an active and respected police presence (compared to other Central American countries, Panama’s crime ratings are very low). A stable democratic government and economy – no fears of civil uprising, or on the more simple end, knowing you can leave your flip flops on the beach and that they will still be there when you get back 😉
3.) US DOLLARIZED ECONOMY
  • Panama began using the US Dollar alongside the Panamanian Balboa shortly after its independence from Colombia in 1903. This means that Panama has a more stable currency, that is less at the whim of rising and falling markets and the socio-economic effects that can follow.
4.) FIRST WORLD MEDICAL FACILITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE
  • Know you’re in the best of care should something happen, and that you don’t have dodge potholes and carve through dirt roads to get the help when you need it.
5.) LAIDBACK, GENUINE, AND FRIENDLY PEOPLE
  • Always willing to help, always with a smile.
6.) UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES
  • Including nearby Coiba National Park (greatest diversity of birds & marine life) and the stunning old town of Casco Viejo in Panama City.
7.) THE CULTURAL SOPHISTICATION OF PANAMA CITY

Panama City is not your typical capital. Your Panama surf and yoga retreat will likely begin with a flight to the capital city. So, why not enjoy the city for a night or two? The Panamanian capital is a blend of old and new world architectural and engineering wonders perched on a narrow strip of land overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. As a trade capital, Panama City is a global city with residents from all over the world. One of the many perks of Panama’s global reach is its diverse and exciting food scene. Beyond the skyscrapers, canal, and decadent food scene, Panama City is home to charming old-world colonial architecture in its Casco Viejo neighborhood. Staying in Casa Viejo feels like you’re worlds away from the city, despite being surrounded by it.

  • There’s a huge diversity of museums, parks, shopping, international cuisine and nightlife.

Over the past 20 years, Panama has come into its own more than ever before. Cultural progress is most visible in Casco Viejo, the city’s old town, which has transformed into a stylish hotspot and UNESCO World Heritage Site rolled into one.

8.) PANAMA IS HOME TO SIX INDIGENOUS GROUPS
  • The Ngöbe-Buglé, Emberá-Wounaan, Naso (Teribe), Guna (Kuna), Bri Bri, and Bokata. Take a trip to the San Blas islands of the Caribbean and experience the Guna tribe, or up jungle rivers to the Ember.

9.) ABUNDANT NATURE
  • Hike volcanoes in Boquete and witness the beauty of the Pacific and Caribbean oceans from one vantage point

ACTIVITIES:

Ready for totally new experiences and to do something big with your week off? Explore the magic of Santa Catalina, Panama with our favourite hand-picked activities. On top of fantastic surfing and yoga these local experiences will get you connected with nature, experience the community, and allow you to completely de-stress.

Yoga:

Imagine being in perfect flow, with your mind and body synced up by the rhythm of the breath. Yoga is meditation in action, connected with the breath, and fully in the present moment. Everything we learn on the mat can be translated into our daily lives, and our time among the waves and ocean. Whether it’s a strong hatha-vinyasa flow or a slow and steady restorative/yin sequence, yoga sessions are designed to enhance vitality and bring you closer to your authentic connection to nature and self.

The ability to ‘go with the flow’ and breath into every challenge that comes our way, without resistance, is profoundly important for the health and quality of our lives, especially now. There’s never been a better time to deepen your yoga practice. All levels of yoga are very welcome and Andrea will adapt classes to suit all abilities.

Andrea Robertson has been leading yoga classed for 18 years. Her practice continues to evolve by drawing inspiration from many different forms of yoga particularly Vinyasa, Hatha, Iyengar, Yin and Power. She is known for combining strength, mobility and power with softness and fluid motion in a creative flow. Her aim is also provide a quiet space for meditation and breath work giving students and introspective experience for a complete mind-body-spirit connection. Andrea is passionate about travel and adventure and has been leading international and local retreats for the last 17 years. We will have 2 yoga classes most days, one in the morning and one in the early evening, classes will be 75 minutes

Surf:

We’ve all heard the expression, “only a surfer knows the feeling”. This is your chance to experience it. The feeling of riding across the face of a green wave, harnessing the pure energy of the ocean and being totally in sync with the rhythms of nature. Once you’ve had a good wave, you want more.

We believe surfing is one of the greatest sports around and everyone, regardless of age, gender and ability should be able to experience its uplifting physical and mental benefits.

  • 90 min class. We start the lesson in studio with theory and surf safety then head down to the beach for hands on lesson. You will have the basics to be able to practice on your own or take more lessons to to continue to grow. We then continue to enhance our surf experience with 3 more lessons (included)

Testimonials from last years experience:

“I recently had the most incredible experience at the surf and yoga retreat in Panama with Andrea. From start to finish, every moment was filled with adventure, relaxation, and pure joy. The retreat offered a perfect blend of activities that catered to both my adventurous spirit and my desire for rejuvenation. Andrea, our guide and instructor, made the entire experience even more special. Her expertise in yoga and her positive energy was contagious. She created an atmosphere that was welcoming, encouraging, and filled with laughter. In a world that often feels fast-paced and overwhelming, this retreat was a welcomed escape. It allowed me to recharge my body, mind, and soul while immersing myself in the beauty of Panama’s landscapes. The memories I’ve made, the friendships I’ve formed, and the skills I’ve learned are invaluable takeaways from this experience. I can’t thank Andrea enough for curating such a remarkable journey. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines surf, yoga, great food, and unforgettable experiences, I wholeheartedly recommend this retreat. It’s a truly transformative experience that will leave you with a heart full of gratitude and a spirit ready to take on the world.”

“Purpose in Panama with Andrea was an absolute delight. The perfect mix of activities and relaxation, in a beautiful setting. The accommodations were charming, featuring a wonderful yoga platform, pool and dining lounge with stunning views of the nearby break. Snorkeling at Coiba National Park gave me the amazing experience of swimming next to turtles and reef sharks. Thanks to the retreat’s instructors, I surfed for the first time and had a ton of fun. The main sandy beach, just a short walk away, offers a lovely break for surfers of all levels. As always, Andrea made this trip easy and fun, being attuned to everyone’s interests, she’s an inspiring leader. Highly recommend this retreat for an unforgettable adventure!”
